The holiday season is here and there is so much going on, we don't know where to start, so let's start with the big tree: Join the whole town --along with Santa and Mrs. Claus -- at the Newport Yachting Center Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Sovereign Bank Family Skating Center, 5:30 p.m., America’s Cup Ave. It's a great event for the whole family including music, ice skating, carols, refreshment and other surprises. And it's free.

Join an authentic German Oktoberfest celebration with lively Bavarian music from throughout New England, delicious German food and American cuisine (seafood, pierogies and more), Biergarten, Weingarten, and special area for children. The gounds at the Newport Yachting Center will be converted into a shopping marketplace with German-related goods for sale featuring continuous entertainment including the Alpenblumen Dancers, Strolling Musicians and International Showbands.

File this under: "You can't fix stupid." Every year the Newport Summer Comedy Series gets better. It kicks off this week with Ron White coming to the Newport Yachting Center. Two of my all-time favorites are back-to-back in July when Jake Johansen (7/15) and Jim Gaffigan (7/22) do Sunday shows. Check their web site for the full schedule.
