Sumo is Japanese for BIG

Nothing says Black Ships Festival like giant sumo wrestlers consuming huge amounts of food. Black Ships Festival events will be help around Newport this weekend.

Looks like it is going to be one of those weather weekends that you judge based on your activities. If you like going to the beach during the day, it should be the perfect hot and steamy day for that, but if you like enjoying the outside nightlife, you may have to worry about some evening storms. I say take the chance.

Newport Hall of Fame Tennis Week

I’m assuming that since you are reading this, you made it through the holiday or you did like us – went somewhere else. We headed north and ironically found ourselves eating at McD’s in Newport, Maine. That wasn’t the plan, but when a diaper needs changing – well, you get the drift.

This week started early with the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in full swing. The big day is Saturday when the Hall of Fame welcomes Michael Chang, Mark McCormack, and Eugene Scott as part of their induction ceremony at 12:30. They will be followed by the semifinals for both singles and doubles starting at 2 pm. The finals are scheduled for Sunday, starting at 2 pm. Chang joins Stan Smith, Todd Martin and Todd Gullikson in the Hall of Fame Classic in an exhibition match at 10 am.

July 4 -- Everyone Goes Somewhere

Newport schools – like all the others – teach that the July 4th is about America’s independence, fireworks and parades. However, the lesson that is easier to learn is that it’s a weekend to stay home and avoid the crowds. This city gets crazy. We can already see the influx of people since many of the summer rentals started on July 1. Usually we get into a lot of details about what’s going around town so we can give you a reason to visit Newport – not this week. You know the July 4th drill. If you are ready to let it out for a wild weekend, then come on down. If that’s not for you, there are still eight summer weekends that might be better for your visit.

Looking ahead to next week, don’t forget about the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.

Bring the Celtics Party to Newport

Anyone get to the big green parade. There was more green at the Celts parade that any St. Patrick's day parade that I've seen. Anyway, it looks like we might have some weather issues Friday evening, but don't let that stop you. It's expected to be great on Saturday so make your plans to hit the beach. If you want to make some plans, the Gulls have home games on friday and monday, and the Newport International Polo Series features a match between the USA vs. Scotland at 5pm on Saturday.
